Thank you for visiting the Glucosamine Research Center. Here you
will be able to find current research on glucosamine, usage information,
clinical abstracts, lay person interpretations, and even a search
feature to effortless find the information you need. Below you will
find links to actual cited peer reviewed clinical studies and an
easy to understand interpretation of every one of the results.
Double-Blind
Clinical Evaluation of the Relative Efficacy of Ibuprofen and Glucosamine
Sulphate
Ibuprofen (a NSAID) and Glucosamine were given in a double blind
clinical study, to evaluate them side by side. While the Ibuprofen
was initially more effective at easing pain, the glucosamine quickly
surpassed the ibuprofen and continued to reduce pain over a longer
period of time, while the doses remained the same.
Efficacy
and Safety of Glucosamine Sulfate in Osteoarthritis of the Spine
There was more improvement with the patients who used the glucosamine
versus the placebo group. The patients also reported less pain,
less stiffness, and better mobility when using glucosamine . In
addition, the glucosamine effects lasted beyond the study, suggesting
a carryover effect that lasts even after glucosamine is discontinued.
Oral
Glucosamine Sulphate in the Management of Arthrosis
This study showed that with glucosamine therapy, symptoms of pain
at rest, upon standing and during exercise during limited active
and passive movements improved steadily through the treatment. Effects
persisted for a period of time after treatment, suggesting that
glucosamine therapy has more than just anti-inflammatory activities.
Glucosamine
Sulfate Decreases Progression of Knee Osteoarthritis
Those patients who received Glucosamine had reduced levels of pain
and very little to no joint space narrowing at the conclusion of
the study. Glucosamine then can be considered effective at helping
to prevent the joint space narrowing associated with osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine
Sulfate in Osteoarthritis of the Knee
This clinical study went all out with a multicenter, randomized,
placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group study design. The
glucosamine group showed a greater decrease in pain than placebo,
with negligible side effects for both groups.
Glucosamine
Sulfate Significantly Reduces Progression Of Knee Osteoarthritis
Glucosamine was administered to half of the patients (1500 mg a
day for three years) and the other half was on placebo. In the Glucosamine
group, no joint narrowing was observed to have occurred, whereas
the control group was narrowing at a rate of .08 to .1 mm per year.
The Glucosamine group improved their symptoms while the placebo
group gradually declined and became worse.
Correlation
Between Radiographic Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis and Future
Disease Progression
The joint space narrowing was significantly less for those patients
who took the glucosamine sulfate (verses placebo). There was also
a reduction in the joint space narrowing for those who took glucosamine
sulfate. This suggests that those patients who have arthritis and
are experiencing joint space narrowing would benefit from glucosamine
sulfate treatments which aid in minimizing and repairing this problem.
