Please note that while this website should not
replace the advice or direction of your doctor, you should find
accurate and complete information on the many facets of arthritis
contained within the many pages that rest here at The Arthritis
& Glucosamine Information Center. If you came here to seek all
about arthritis, chondroitin, arthritis in pets and specific types
of arthritis then you certainly have come to the right place.
Arthritis is a debilitating and progressive disease
that strikes approximately one in three adults in the United States.
There are over 100 known types of arthritis and according to the
Centers for Disease Control, it is the nation’s leading cause
of disability. Tino Mantella, President of the Arthritis Foundation
writes, “arthritis is the number one cause of disability and
affects more people than ever imagined. It’s time we, individually
and as a society, fully realize the seriousness of arthritis and
take action to limit its impact.” Tino’s words ring
true for millions of us as we attempt to go about our everyday activities,
button up our clothing or even hold onto our loved ones.
According to estimates from the American Academy
of Orthopedic Surgeons, “Each year, arthritis results in 750,000
hospitalizations and 36 million outpatient visits. In 1995, medical
care for arthritis cost nearly $22 billion, and the total cost,
including lost productivity, topped $82 billion.” Nearly two-thirds
of people with arthritis are younger than 65 years of age. Clearly,
arthritis is not just an “old person’s disease”.
Did you know that there is even a juvenile form of arthritis? Arthritis
can even be caused by injury at virtually any age.
That nagging pain that seems to always come and
go in your joints or that stiffness in the morning may very well
be the result of the many more common types of arthritis. It is
time we take action and get educated about what arthritis is, what
can be done to combat its effects (there is currently no known cure)
and ease the pain and suffering that millions of Americans live
with each and every day. You don’t have to live in pain anymore.
